Description
Introduction:Herfor (from Old Norse: Herfǫr, meaning "war expedition") is a drawless game for two players: Black and White. It is played on the intersections (points) of an initially empty hexagonal board with triangles. It can be played on a 7-sized board for long games or on a 5-sized board for short games. Each player has access to a single set of 127 identical stones of two colors, one color on the front and another color on the back.
Definitions:
A phalanx is a maximal set of stones of the same color connected in a straight line. A single stone is also a phalanx.
The length of a phalanx is the number of stones it contains.
A new phalanx is a phalanx that, during a turn, grows by at least one additional stone adjacent to it in a straight line, even if two friendly phalanxes merge or not, otherwise it is an old phalanx.
An invading phalanx is a new phalanx that is sandwiched between two enemy phalanxes adjacent to the invading phalanx, all arranged in a straight line. The two mentioned enemy phalanxes are invaded phalanxes.
To flip is to replace a stone with a stone of the opposite color.
Turns:Black plays first, then turns alternate. On your turn, perform these actions in the following order:
Place a stone of your color on an empty point not adjacent to enemy phalanxes, unless you are forming a friendly invading phalanx.
Flip a number N of stones from invaded phalanxes whenever N is equal for the pair of such phalanxes and is equal to the length of the shorter phalanx among the invaded phalanxes in that same straight line.
End of game:The game ends when the board is full. At the end of the game, the player with the most number of stones of his color on the board is the winner.
To balance the game, before starting, the first player places a black stone on an empty point and the second player chooses a side. This balancing method is called the pie rule.
